Glyco-core Symposium 2024

Glycans play an important role in various biological processes. However, owing to their structural diversity and complexity, information on glycans is limited compared to that on nucleic acids and proteins. Innovation in various glycan analysis technologies (including modern mass spectrometry) has made it possible to obtain comprehensive information on glycans present in living organisms. International glycoscience projects are being promoted in many countries worldwide.

In Japan, the Human Glycome Atlas Project (HGA) was started in 2023 and aims to clarify the detailed structures of human glycans and their changes in disease, as well as the deep characterization of glycan biosynthetic enzymes. Furthermore, iGCORE (Nagoya University and Gifu University, Tokai National Higher Education and Research System), ExCELLS (National Institutes of Natural Sciences), GaLSIC (Soka University), and the Japanese glycoscience community has launched “J-GlycoNet,” which is a research hub to support interdisciplinary collaboration for researchers in Japan and other countries. Information on glycans is expected to increase in future. We believe that a new glycoscience that integrates fields such as biology, medical science, chemistry, information science, engineering, and pharmacology is essential for a true understanding of life.

Therefore, we decided to hold a "Glyco-Core Symposium" to further promote the integration of glycoscience with research in various fields. We hope that it will provide a great opportunity to deepen exchanges with people from a wide range of fields and countries and to think about the future of life sciences.
