Paper

Designated Professor Morten Thaysen-Andersen and Designated Associate Professor Rebeca Kawahara have published their research results in PNAS.

Key points of research results:

  • The first line of defense in our immune systems are white blood cells, 40% to 70% of which are neutrophils. The neutrophils produce bactericidal glycoproteins during their maturation and stores them in cells, and use these bactericidal glycoproteins to promote inflammation and attack invading microbes.
  • The glycan structure of bactericidal glycoproteins was unknown, but as a result of this study, it was found that it is highly unusual glycans.
  • This discovery is a valuable resource for understanding the biological role of the origin of intracellular responses and contributes to the understanding of immune responses in normal people and leukemia patients.
